Our fifth trip was to a secondary school on Sunshine Coast of BC - Chatelech Secondary School in Sechelt. It was a very interesting visit, as we have never visited that school. We were also happy to meet a very dedicated physics teacher - Mr. Peter McConnell. Most importantly, during that visit we were joined by a very special person - an educator, a truly inspiring human being, and also a very experienced pilot and aviator - Mr. Chris Georgas. Mr. Georgas lives in Sechelt and he kindly agreed to join us during that day. Chris prepared a very interesting presentation on the history of aviation and on the science of flight. He shared with the students his passion for aviation. He also showed us how to engage with the students - as Chris has been a teacher for 31 years! The students were very involved. We hope to develop a special presentation on the science behind aviation and be able to share it with the students during our future school visits!
Once again, we are grateful to science world, who supports our visits, for helping us reach many rural and remote communities in BC and give every BC student an opportunity to see applications of science to their lives beyond their classrooms, as well as consider STEM careers.
Mr. Peter McConnell (Physics teacher), Marina, a student from the school and Mr. Chris Gorgas.Chladni plates demonstration is always a success. This time, Valery also had time to discuss his own research and how the physics students learn in high school is used in cutting edge research he is doing at UBC.Getting to Sechelt from Vancouver is not as easy as it looks. One must fly or take a ferry.
