EducAir takes off – STEM Trip #1: Carihi Secondary School, Campbell River, BC

Even though we had to wake up at 4:15 am on May 3, 2023 we were happy. It was the day of our first school visit. We have been planning it for week and had to postpone it a number of times as the weather in April wasn't safe for flying. Luckily, Mr. Bill Deagle from Carihi Secondary School who invited us understood it and was flexible with the dates. That day, the weather was good and we planned to be in Campbell River around 7:30 am to be able to be on time for the first class. This was very exciting. Valery has been working on organizing the travel science demo box for weeks, as we wanted to show the students our fast-speed camera experiments, such as shattering a wine glass with sound, the vibration of a tuning fork, or a free fall of a slinky. As we discussed waves, we demonstrating a Chinese spouting bowl, as well as Chladni Plates. These are experiments that university students often experience in their first year introductory physics courses! We also wanted to share Valery's research, as he prepared a special presentation for secondary students to discuss the most recent results from his lab. This was a very special day for us. We have met some of these students during the UBC Physics Olympics last March, but it was our first time to visit the school. We were also very inspired by the students and by their teacher. It was a very positive experience for us and we hope some of these students will decide to pursue STEM fields in the future.
